When It Fits Right…

There’s no mistaking the feeling you get when your bra fits right but here are a few tips to look out for:

  • You’re not dying to get home and yank the thing off!
  • The band of the bra should fit snugly around the body.
  • The underwires should lie flat against the body, enveloping the entire breast. It shouldn’t dig into the body; either underneath the arm or on the breast tissue.
  • The band fits in a straight line all around the chest, not riding up at the back.
  • The entire bra is snug and comfortable, not pinching or digging into the flesh.

When The Whole Thing Just Doesn’t Feel Right…
…And What To Do About It
(Solutions to poor bra fittings)

My breasts are bulging over the top of the bra
The cup of the bra is too small. As long as the band fits snugly, try a bigger cup size.

“The underwire and the centre front of the bra are floating a few centimeters away from my body”
Again, this is because the bra cups are too small, making the breasts push the centre front away from the skin. A bigger cup size is needed.

“My shoulder straps are digging into my skin, leaving marks and causing pain”
Naturally, the first thing you might want to try is just to loosen the straps for a more comfortable fit. If this doesn’t work, then it might well be that the band of the bra is too loose, transferring the job of supporting the breasts to the straps. The majority of support for the breasts should come from the band, not from the shoulder straps.

“I’ve got the back of my bra nearly reaching my shoulders!”
If the back band on your bra is riding up, this is usually because the band is too loose. Try fastening the bra on a tighter hook for a snugger fit. If this makes little or no difference, consider a smaller band size.

“What do I do if I have one breast size larger than the other? Do I buy a bra with cups to fit the smaller breast or the larger one?”
The majority of women have breasts one larger than the other, but this is not something to worry about. Simply ensure that you buy a bra that fits the larger breast perfectly. You can tighten the strap on the smaller breast and it should be fine. The other way round doesn’t work quite as well.

“I have to inhale to clasp the hooks at the back. The band is stretched too tightly”
Usually, the band should fit perfectly and the straps should lie straight down the back, parallel to each other. If the band is too tight or the straps lie in an upside-down ‘V’, then you need to try a larger band size.

“Ouch! The underwires are digging into my flesh!”
This could be an issue with either the bra band or the cup size. If the cup is too small, the wire will not totally encase the breast, thus making it dig into your skin. However, if you had to stretch the hooks at the back to clasp, it might well be that the band is too small, causing the wire to be distorted and not follow the natural curve of the breast. So, check where the tightness starts and that will give you a good indication of where the problem lies.

“The bra feels like it’s fitting right but there’s some space where the nipple should be”
If you have space only at the front tip of the bra, this is usually because the bra cup is too small and the breast can’t ‘pour’ freely into the bra. If however, you simply have space or creases in the bra, this is because the cup is too large and your breasts can’t fill it.
